Who we are

Te Āhuru Mōwai – Homes for whānau, is committed to supporting all tenants by helping them live well in their homes.

Under a partnership with the New Zealand Government, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira (Ngāti Toa), established a registered community housing provider in October 2020 - Te Āhuru Mōwai Limited Partnership (“Te Āhuru Mōwai”). Te Āhuru Mōwai manage and care for 950 plus homes and their Whānau in what was called the Western Porirua Housing Portfolio. The homes provide tenancies for people on lower incomes, and some of these whānau also have other social support needs. The homes are in the suburbs of Grenada, Tawa, Elsdon, Takapūwāhia, Titahi Bay, Mana and Paekākāriki. Prior to October 2020, the homes were managed by Kāinga Ora (formally Housing New Zealand).

Te Āhuru Mōwai operate a whānau-focussed service that is aligned with the tikanga and values of Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira Inc. Our service objectives include provision and maintenance of warm dry homes for tenant whānau, while also working with other NGO’s and community groups to contribute to improved wellbeing outcomes for the wider community.

As part of our role in managing the homes under the 50-year agreement, Te Āhuru Mōwai will progressively upgrade the portfolio over time to ensure that all homes are warm dry and fit for purpose. There are prospects for progressive purchase, redevelopment, and growth in housing supply – we will build new homes for sale, for social housing, and for use in programmes aimed at increasing housing amongst whānau who may not otherwise be able to do so.

Te Āhuru Mōwai is a Tier 1 reporting entity and is independently governed by its own Board of Directors.

Te Āhuru Mōwai is connected to Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira through its objective’s values and overall purpose. Te Āhuru Mōwai will ensure that it operates in a fashion consistent with Ngāti Toa’s direction, while serving all members of the community who need social or affordable housing.

Te whāinga o te Āhuru Mōwai Limited (Mission):

About Te Āhuru Mōwai Limited Partnership

Te Āhuru Mōwai name and logo

The name was chosen by Tā Matiu Rei of Ngāti Toa Rangatira meaning ‘A sheltering haven’.

The koru patterns in the design represent new life, new beginnings and growth in community housing. The triangular shape of the design depicts housing which shelters the koru patterns (sheltering the new beginnings, the people and allowing growth in a safe haven). The design has been split into two sides. This represents the people and the Ngāti Toa iwi on one side and the housing haven on the other side. The notion of having two sides, allows the representation of unity among the iwi/people and the housing.

The logo was designed by Fetu Ese (Ngāti Toa).
